The Area’s research connects fundamental mathematical questions with applications in physics, biology, engineering and industry. Its research groups work in Geometry and Mathematical Physics; Mathematical Analysis, Modelling, and Applications; and SISSA mathLab. SAMBA adds an experimental collaboration with Cognitive Neuroscience.
The research of this group is diverse and multidisciplinary. Professors, post-doctoral fellows and graduate students face problems in integrable systems, in relation with differential, symplectic and algebraic geometry, as well as special functions and nonlinear waves; noncommutative geometry, geometry of strings and quantum fields and mathematical methods of quantum physics; stochastic geometry and real algebraic geometry. The will to understand the intimate connection between Physics and Geometry has lead to a collaboration between different areas of research at SISSA, culminating in the iGAP project.
The activity in mathematical analysis is mainly focused on Dynamical Systems and PDEs, on the Calculus of Variations, on Hyperbolic Conservation Laws and Transport Problems, on Geometric Analysis, Lorentzian Geometry and on Geometry and Control theory. Connections of these topics with differential geometry and reduced order modeling are also developed.
The activity in mathematical modelling is oriented to subjects for which the main technical tools come from mathematical analysis. The present themes are multiscale analysis, mechanics of materials, cell motility and mechano-biology, micromagnetics, modelling of biological systems, computational fluid and solid dynamics and problems related to control theory.
The applications of mathematics developed in this course are related to the numerical analysis of partial differential equations and of control problems. This activity is organized in collaboration with mathLab for the study of problems coming from the real world, from industrial applications, and from complex systems.
Since 2010 SISSA mathLab is a laboratory for mathematical modelling and scientific computing devoted to the interactions between mathematics and its applications, with several industrial collaborations with national and international companies.
Its research concerns numerical analysis and scientific computing applied to partial differential equations and to control problems: the development of innovative computational algorithms, numerical methods for geometrical and computational reduction, also in the parameter space, and applications to design, optimisation, inverse problems and uncertainty quantification in computational mechanics, with a special focus on computational fluid and solid mechanics, also multiphysics.
